PULA, the chief and the largest town of Istria, like most Istrian towns its origin can be traced back to preantique earth work. More about its past is known only from the Roman time. Under the name of Colonia Julia Polentia Herculanea, which it bore during the time of emperors. Pula spread within protective walls which had several gateways. It acquired its basic urban layout with a forum, as a centre, town hall built between two temples, two theatres,a large amphitheatre and a necropolis. The population reached 25.000 – 30.000 during the empire.
Pula passed to the Ostrogoths after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, than the Slavs and Avars, and then became a part of the Frankish Empire which introduced the feudal system in Istria.
Under Venetians rule Pula prospered for a time, developing intensive maritime trade in oil, livestock, building stone, fur and the wool products.
During tihe Austrian domination (1797 – 1918) which was interupted from 1805 -1914, Pula at first started to stagnate, and in the begining of the 19th century had basely less than 1000 unhabitants. But when K-und K Monarchy began to build its chief naval harbour in it, Pula began rapidly to thrive.
