Pelješac is the largest peninsula in Dalmatia ( second in Croatia )and if we observe its history it becomes clear that all major civilizations left their trace in this corner of the Mediterranean, and an authentic culture on this peninsula developed due to these influences. Peljesac is the name of the huge peninsula, which is 65 km long (from Ston in the east to Loviste in the west). The highest peak is Saint Elias above Orebic; it is 961 m high. The inhabitants have always occupied themselves mainly with wine-growing and shipping. For the island of Korcula, Peljesac is land and the early settling of Korcula took place from Peljesac. History divided Peljesac and Korcula from the year 1000; Korcula than spent almost 8 centuries under Venetian rule and influence, while Peljesac was never under the rule of Venice. Peljesac was an important part of the Republic of Dubrovnik from 1333, when Dubrovnik bought it from the Kotromanic dynasty, until 1808. During that long period the Peljesac Channel divided two Adriatic opponents, giving importance to the town of Korcula and to the south part of the Channel, as well as to the settlements of the northern coast of these unique straits. As Venice receded so did the Republic of Dubrovnik, and Peljesac and Korcula found themselves belonging to one state - the Austrian Empire - in the 19th century
The well-known Ston Walls connect the towns of Mali Ston and Ston which are known for their rich history and old stone centres. Ston is known for its salt factory which dates back to the times of the Republic of Dubrovnik and it is still in function today. It is also famous for its well-known growing sites of various seashells you can taste in one of the many restaurants in Ston.
The town of Orebic, the cradle of sea captains and sailors, has a rich maritime tradition which is still preserved to today. Trpanj is a small fishermen's town with its small pebble beaches, healthy mud in Blaca and therapeutic Dalmatian herbs. It lies on the southern coast of the peninsula that is connected to the mainland by road via Ston and by ferry line Ploce - Trpanj. The whole peninsula, covered with dense evergreen and Mediterranean vegetation, belongs to the warmest places on the Adriatic thanks to the many sunny days. In Orebic, there is a wide range of tourist services: private and hotel accommodation, sporting and recreational facilities (including tennis courts and football fields), water sports (all necessary equipment can be rented on the beaches), and sailing and surfing courses.
