Nin is located on a small island and connected with the mainland with two bridges. Nin is situated in the shallow Nin cove, 17 kilometers from Zadar. This area has been inhabited since prehistory. It was the center of the antique Liburnia, and in the time of national dynasties (the Middle Ages) it was the seat of the county and the center of "Croatian Bishop". The Croatian kings stayed in Nin and the church and state assemblies were kept there.
The remains of amphitheater and forum are in Nin still visible, and many Roman grave monuments, jewelry, pottery and glass vessels, and other objects, were found in the surrounding area. The small church of St. Cross, probably from the 9th century, with dome and the ground plan in the shape of a belongs to the Pre-Romanesque period. The parish church of St. Anzelmo has rich treasury with relics from around 800. The hexagonal stone baptistery basin with the inscription that mentions the prince Viseslav (around 800) also origins from Nin. The defense walls with towers are also preserved. In Prahulje, not far from the road Nin - Zaton, there is the small Pre-Romanesque church of St. Nikola from the 11th century, built on the top of the prehistoric mound.
