The Republic developed diplomacy and was paying taxes to the Turks for the free trade on the Balkans. The town was struck by a strong earthquake in 1667. The Republic of Dubrovnik was abolished by the French in 1808 and was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy and later became a part of Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy.
