ABOUT TISNO
Tisno is a town in the Central Adriatic, in the region of Dalmatia. Part of it is situated on the mainland, and part of it on the island of Murter. The narrow strait gives the town its name – Tisno ("narrow" in the local dialect).
The two parts of the town are connected by a bridge first built in the early 18th century, which is when the town started spreading to the mainland. In 1968 the old bridge was replaced by a new, modern movable bridge.
Tisno has become an ideal starting point for visits to the nearby Kornati and Krka National Parks. The national parks can be visited individually or by organized boat trips. The Krka National Park can be reached by ground as well.
The town has approximately 1600 inhabitants, the average temperature in July and August is around 25°C, and the pleasant maestro wind cools the air and makes the daytime hours more bearable. The average sea temperature in the summer is around 24°C, and the island enjoys approximately 2700 sun hours a year
HISTORY OF TISNO
The first mention of Tisno dates back to 1474. The town was formed as refugees from the Turkish invasions started settling down in the area. Tisno is made famous by the fact that one part of the town is located on the mainland, and the other on the island of Murter. The old (Murter) and the new (mainland) part of the town were first connected by a bridge in 1797, and the newest bridge was built in 1991.
The town church of the Holy Ghost was built in 1548, and expanded in the 17th and19th centuries as the population grew. Local constructors built the 31-meter belfry (separate from the church) between 1680 and 1684. The church was renovated in the Baroque style in 1640. The Brošica Hill (114 m) above town hosts the church of Our Lady of Karavaj, famous for its painting of Our Lady of Karavaj (by Caravaggio) brought from Italy in the early 18th century. The church was built in the 18th century, and renovated at the end of the 20th century. In the nearby village of Ivinje is the medieval church of St. Martin, whereas Dazlina boasts the 11th century church of St. Elijah and the remnants of a medieval tower. Other churches in the town include St. Andrew's (1606) and St. Roch's (1651).
The local registers of births, marriages and deaths have, throughout history, been written in the Old Church Slavonic, Italian and Croatian languages. The register written in the Glagolitic alphabet and covering the period from 1610 to 1638 is one of the oldest registers in the Šibenik County.
