ABOUT KASTELA:

Kastela (in English: forts) consists of seven nice old towns (administratively the City of Kastela): Kaštel Štafilic, Kaštel Novi, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Lukšic, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Gomilica and Kaštel Sucurac). Kastela is an integral part of the tourist area between Split and Trogir. This region has been attracting people since ancient times, from ancient Greek seafarers, Roman patricians, Croatian kings and rulers, vegetable growers to present-day tourists. Croats settled in Kastela region in the seventh century. During the war with Turks they moved from the mountain villages towards the forts erected by aristocrats along the coast, in order to protect themselves and their peasants. 500 years ago, some 20 castles and forts were erected, of which nowadays seven have been preserved. Around them settlements were sprouting to finally merge together into the town of Kastela.

The beaches of Kastela Riviera stretch for 6 km and encompass many bays and swimming areas surrounded by pine trees and are perfect for water sports (equipment can be rented on the beaches). The most beautiful ones can be found in Kastel Stafilic (location of "APARTMENT HOUSE RUZA"). The Croats settled here in the seventh century and created here the centre of their state. Here they converted to Christianity and built their settlements along the slopes of the Kozjak mountain. During the war with Turks they moved from the mountain villages towards fortifications erected by royals along the coast, in order to protect themselves and their peasants. Thus, 500 years ago there was a significant development of some twenty castles, fortifications, of which nowadays only seven are preserved. Around them settlements were sprouting to finally merge together into the town of Kastela. Seven little stone pearls in one shell; the magic number 7 will always remain the symbol of richness and variety of our town.

Kastel Stafilic (location of "APARTMENT HOUSE RUZA") is one of the seven Kastela settlements. It is the favourite destination of domestic and foreign tourists. Visitor opportunities include swimming, sports and recreation, as well as entertainment and excursion programs. An exceptional Mediterranean atmosphere, the beauty of its green landscape and its always-sunny sand beaches, are a part of this towns charm. Where there is an olive, there is the Mediterranean, and the olive tree of all olives grows already some 1500 years in Kastel Stafilic. It bears a witness of continuous noble surroundings and the arts and crafts of local farmers.

The fort of Kastel Stafilic, today known as the tower Rotonda, was built in 1508 by Stjepan Stafileo on a rock embedded in the sea, as protection against the Turks. He had a grapestaphile (greek) carved into his seal. Next to the castle a fortified village was established, surrounded by a channel and a moveable bridge with protection towers, of which one is still preserved in it's original form. People from the area of Bijaci settled here.

Kastel Novi: The central fortress in Kastel Novi was built in 1512 by Pavo Cipiko, while the town center consists of a tower clock, church and main square. There are many sporting and recreational facilities, as well as entertainment events and local festivities in Kastel Novi.

Kastel Stari: Picturesque Kastel Stari is the oldest of seven settlements placed on the beautiful coastline between Trogir and Split. The settlement first developed on fertile flatland suitable for the growing of grapes and fruit. Due to its splendid beaches, Croatian aristocrats built many summer residences and fortifications in Kastel Stari in the 15th century.

Kastel Luksic is a tourist resort in the central part of the Kastela Gulf, famous for the botanical garden with Mediterranean vegetation, as well as for nice pebble beaches. It has a 70-years-long tradition in tourism.

The attractions of Kastel Kambelovac include nice beaches, numerous restaurants, a beautiful seaside promenade and the nearby hill Kozjak.

Kastel Gomilica has nice sand beaches, suitable for children. Entertainment programs and dancing nights are regularly organized.

The main festivity of the City of Kastela is the Municipal Day (4th of March).

Sports and recreational facilities include tennis courts, as well as various playgrounds for basketball, football and volleyball. Water sports equipment and boats are rented. Excursions are regularly organized.

Kastela stretches in the direction east - west (20-odd km), between the northern coast of the Kastela Gulf in the south, the crests of Trnoscak (472 m), Labinstica (701 m), Opor (602 m) and Kozjak (780 m) in the north and Krban (144 m) in the west. The eastern part of Kastela descends abruptly toward the sea, while the western part consists of a fertile plain (Veliko and Malo Polje; Big and Small Fields). Winters are mild and wet, and summers warm and dry; summer droughts occur frequently. Kastela are divided into the Upper (Gornja) and the Lower (Donja) Kastela. They consist of seven small towns (Stafilic, Novi, Stari, Luksic, Kambelovac, Gomilica and Sucurac). Main crops grown in the Kastela field are vines, fruit and vegetables. Kastela is located on the main road (M2, E65) and the railroad Split – Knin - Zagreb.
